The basis for gardening success is – logically! – the soil. Is it loose, vital, full of trace elements and minerals, and does it have the right pH value? If so, plants can grow and thrive. This also allows the soil to store water and supports the vital exchange of oxygen.
Soil diagnosis – with all your senses
You can see and feel the condition of your soil.
A crumbly structure, woodlice or earthworms are a good sign. Your nose can also tell you whether the soil environment is healthy: does it smell pleasant, like good forest humus? Or is there a smell of decay in the air? If so, this could be a sign of soil compaction and waterlogging. Even if plants are ailing, growing poorly and requiring a lot of work, this is often because the soil is depleted.
